Observation Report: Cathedral

Observation Report

On Tuesday, 25 February, me and several of my schoolmates visited The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary. This is a Catholic church in Moscow, situated on the Small Gruzinskaya Street. This cathedral is the biggest Catholic cathedral in Russia and one of the two merely Catholic churches in Moscow. Church services are served in multiple linguistic communications, including English, Gallic, Polish, Russian and so on. Practically every hebdomad organ concerts are given in the Cathedral. We intented to detect interaction between people during the service and when there is no service, but non during the concert as these are two wholly different state of affairss, that ‘s why we ‘ve chosen clip on a working day before the eventide service in Russian ( harmonizing to the information on the Cathedral site ) . But it turned out that merely before the Russian service the Polish 1 is served, so alternatively of detecting during and out of the service clip, we ‘ve observed during the Polish and the Russian services. Our observation was participant – we were sitting together with others on the benches and did n’t demo that this is the first clip we are in the Catholic Church ( for case, when a adult male who gave out books with supplications, offered it to us, we took it, and when people sterted to agitate custodies with those around them in the terminal of the Russian service, we besides participated in that ) .( but it must hold been obvious. You did n’t cognize the ritualized Catholic motions… ? )

We came to the cathedral at about 17.45. The Polish service should hold started at 18.00 and some people have already been coming in. Several people, evidently, did n’t desire to see service and have come merely to pray, as they have left the church before the start of the relief. Both before the service and during the Russian and the Polish Servicess there were more adult females than adult male in the church and more middle-aged people than younger and older 1s. Before the start of the service some people were praying either siiting on the benchs ( chiefly adult male and younger adult females ) or on bended articulatio genuss ( chiefly middle-aged or aged adult females ) . One adult male was reading something, barely the Bible or a prayer-book, it was more similar to a magazine or a newspaper and he did n’t remain till the begining of the service and left the church merely several proceedingss before the start.( good item )Some people were in braces ( non really much, but there were some, preponderantly two adult females together ) , but they practically did n’t pass on with each other and were sitting mutely. Some people were obviously acquainted with others and welcomed them when came in.

When the Polish Service started there were about 15-20 people in the Cathedral. Some people were listening to the relief vertical and others, preponderantly, those, who were younger, stayed sitting. Several people attracted my attending and are deserving being mentioned here. The first were adult females in monastic ‘s dressings. One of them was an aged Polish lady ( she came before the start of the service, heard us talking in a susurration and asked us non speak in the church ) , evidently she is working in this Cathedral. Two other adult females in cloistered frocks, different from that of the aged lady, came together about 10 proceedingss after the start of the Service and prayed along with others but a spot aside.

The second was a immature adult female really good and expensively dressed. She looked really otherwise from other people in the church, but she prayed along with others on her articulatio genuss and behaved like a spiritual individual ( her visual aspect and such submissive behaviour contradicted each other a spot ) . A really similar state of affairs was besides during the Russian service – there was besides a really good dressed adult female who prayed a batch and was non afraid of remaining on her articulatio genuss. I write here that these adult females attracted my attending because normally when I see such a adult female I don’t anticipate them to see church and besides pray a batch on the bent articulatio genuss.( good observation )

But most of all stroke me two immature misss during the Polish Service. They came several proceedingss after the begining and foremost set quitely in the center of the hall. But so they took their phones and started to take self-photos of themselves! And so in the center of the service they moved to the flank portion of the Cathedral ( behind the columns ) and started to take exposures of each other at that place. And they do that while the priest was reading the supplication and other people were praying. I suppose that they were non Catholics and came in merely for an jaunt.

During the Russian service there were much more people than during the Polish one and there were besides several twosomes – misss with their fellows which came together, but during the service they merely set and did n’t take part actively. In the terminal of both of the services people shook custodies of people sitting around them and wished all the best and a well-groomed immature adult females, I mentioned above, besides shook our custodies in the terminal of the service. After the terminal of the Polish service most people left the Cathedral but some people stayed at that place. For case, a adult female which came before the Polish service and prayed during that service, stayed for the Russian one and sang a spiritual vocal in the mike.

In general, it is deserving stating that the whole experience of sing a Catholic Cathedral was instead unusual but really interesting for me. It was the first clip I’ve been to the Catholic Church and I was instead surprised that it differs so much from the Orthodox 1. Not merely the visual aspect of the Cathedral differs ( there is no icons and people can non set tapers ) , but the whole ambiance. Many people say that Catholic Churchs are much more democratic than the Orthodox, I can non state that I wholly agree with that,( Protestant is more democratic )but, truly, the ambiance differs. It seemed to me that people in the Catholic Church are more unite during the service compared to Orthodox church, but, may be this is merely my subjective sentiment.( grounds? )Besides, it seems to me that more people are really spiritual and follow regulations and traditions ( for illustration, pray on the articulatio genuss ) compared to the Russian Orthodox Church, particularly if we compare behaviour of immature and middle-aged people.

After the observation I can reason that though people do non interact and pass on much in the church, their integrity is sensitive.( ill-defined )But, it was noticeable that some people are lasting parish ( they conducted themselves more confidently and, I suppose that they were those who prayed on their articulatio genuss ) , while others are fledglings, who do n’t see the church frequently ( they did n’t hold familiarities in the church and were non so confident and, I suppose, they were diffident to pray on the bent articulatio genuss, besides they did n’t read supplications aloud and did n’t take part actively in the Service ) , but cipher looked at them ( and on us besides ) disapprovingly.

The integrity( what do you intend by this? Community? Togetherness? )of people go toing church appears through their behavior and some unverbal marks, non through the consecutive communicating. And this integrity refer to those people who are church haunters ( as it seems to me ) as they do the same things all together and follow the same rites. Furthermore this unity is due to the fact that those people who visit services on a regular basis know each other and there dealingss are personal. To my head in Russian Orthodox Church people are more individualised during the service, this unity is non so noticeable, but I do n’t feign to province it for certain because it may be merely my subjective perceptual experience of the services I ‘ve been to. May be it is so because there are a batch of Orthodox Church?µs in Russia and besides Orthodoxy, any manner, is the most popular faith in Russia and there are excessively many members un the church. And as for Catholics, there are merely two Catholic Cathedrals in Moscow, so, all spiritual Catholic people should see merely these two churches and, as a cosequence, many of them know each other and there relationships are more personal.

But people who are fledglings ( I use this term non to state that they are for the really first clip in the Cathedral, but to call people who do n’t see spiritual services really frequently and that ‘s why act a spot differnt from others ) stand out from others as they upset the unity( how? What did you see? ). I suppose that it may be said that people who are changeless visiters of the church are a societal group ( in general, utilizing societal footings, I think that it is better to call it «quasi group» as this people form merely impermanent group during the relief ) and those, who come at that place seldom ( but were at that place during the service ) seemed to be out of that group. They were excluded because they did non hold familiarities at that place, kept a distance ( set preponderantly in the back rows ) and did n’t cognize rites and traditions.

Womans, expensievely dressed, I ‘ve mentiond above, may be seen like «strangers» in Simmel ‘s significance who defined them based on the integrity of closeness and distance from the societal group. These two adult females, on the one manus, were spiritual and followed rites, prayed along with others on their articulatio genuss, so, officially, they were portion of the societal group. But, on the other manus, they stand a spot apart, did n’t pass on with anyone neither before nor after the service and kept themselves really independently. It was noticeable, that they visit the Cathedral on a regular basis, but they were different and individualised both from haunters and fledglings because of their behavior and visual aspect.

As for the misss, who took exposures in the Cathedral, it was instead unusual for me that cipher reprimanded them. Cipher even paid attending to them, though, to my mind their behaviour was condemnable. Possibly it was so because they set behind people who visit the Cathedral on a regular basis and follow regulations and traditions so they could non detect their behavior, and those, who set in the dorsum rows, as I ‘ve already said, were, preponderantly «newcomers» and that is why, I suppose, they felt that they did non hold adequate authorization to do rebukes to these misss. On the other manus, if «haunters» saw that misss, it may intend that they are tolerant to the interruption of societal norms of behavior in the church or that they do non hold rigorous norms and countenances.( good point )

To reason, it may be said, that in general, there is really small societal interaction in the church, those which exist are based on common religion and faith. Peoples may form societal groups, but this is non lasting, well-organized groups, they are more likely to be impermanent quasi groups. And though the difference between haunters and fledglings is well-seen, there is no struggle between the group and the aliens, they coexist with each other. The intangibleness of societal interaction in the Cathedral may be explained by the fact that faith is a really intimate issue and many people prefer to see churches and pray entirely and non to pass on with other people. That is why it is instead hard to understand the procedures which occur in the church based merely on one visit. To better understand these procedures several Acts of the Apostless of observation are needed to understand, for case, if there truly is division between haunters and fledglings in the church, or. May be it is merely my subjective reading of what I ‘ve seen, and, in fact, people, who were non really active behaved so non because they visited church seldom but because it is their specific manner of behavior during the service.

There is really good item at the beginning of the essay on your observation. The analysis, nevertheless, could hold better interacted with these inside informations, utilizing specific observations as grounds. However, it is a good study. Rate7
